When an 18-year-old James 'Skip' Oliver LLD'02 BA'67, arrived on the Saint Mary's campus in the fall of 1963, he could not have known the profound impact the university would have on his life - and the lasting impact he would have on Saint Mary's Athletics.
From Norristown, Pennsylvania, Skip was encouraged by his high school football coach to attend Saint Mary's, a Jesuit university at that time. On his very first day on campus, he met David Murphy BA'66 - Huskies quarterback and future Saint Mary's Athletic Director - beginning a friendship that would become one of the defining relationships of his life. The two became inseparable friends and went on to attend many Super Bowls together.
Skip played football at St. Mary's for four years but his contribution to Saint Mary's extended well beyond the football field. A respected and well-liked member of the student body, he served as Vice-President of the Amateur Athletic Association, wrote for the school newspaper and served as layout editor of the 1967 yearbook. His leadership and contributions to campus life were recognized when he was named Saint Mary's "Man of the Year" in 1967.
That same year, Skip was the recipient of Gold, Literary and Athletic "M Awards," with the Athletic M presented by legendary Huskies football coach Robert Hayes in recognition of his contributions to the football program.
After graduating from Saint Mary's in 1967, Skip travelled up Robie Street to Dalhousie University for Law School, earning his Juris Doctor degree in 1970. He returned to his home state of Pennsylvania and had a distinguished legal career as a senior partner at the general practice law firm of Oliver & Caiola, LLC, in his home state of Pennsylvania, being listed in the Who's Who of American Law, and retiring with a Preeminent attorney rating.

But while his professional career took him back across the border, Skip's connection to Saint Mary's never faded. He became an important part of the Huskies football family beyond his playing days, acting as a scout for coach Al Keith and helping recruit eight members of the 1973 Huskies team that went on to win the first Vanier Cup in school history.

For more than six decades, Skip has remained a steadfast supporter, advocate and contributor to Huskies Football. His generosity has taken many forms - from providing essential equipment such as practice sleds and helmets, to helping fund team dinners and supporting the program in countless other ways.

His commitment has never been simply financial. Skip has remained deeply invested in the people, traditions and spirit of Huskies Football - carrying the memories and friendships forged during his student days into a lifelong relationship with the university. Skip is also a member of the Old Dogs Husky Football Hall of Fame, further cementing his place among the many people who have helped shape the tradition and legacy of Saint Mary's football.
His enduring connection to Saint Mary's was celebrated in 2002, when Skip served as the convocation speaker at the university's 200th anniversary commencement and received an Honourary Doctorate of Law from Saint Mary's. In 2018, he was presented with the Saint Mary's Distinguished Community Service Award, recognizing an alumnus who has made an outstanding contribution to both their community and Saint Mary's University.
Skip's passion for helping his community is not limited to Saint Mary's and Huskies football. He is one of the founders of the Child Development Foundation for special needs children, serving as President for 35 years, and has been honoured by many charitable organizations including the American Cancer Society and American Red Cross.
Also during his first year at Saint Mary's, Skip met his wife Judy at a mixer at the campus gymnasium. They were married on campus, at the school's chapel, by the then Dean of Men, Fr. Hennessey. Skip and Judy's special bond with Nova Scotia eventually led the family to purchase a cottage in St. Margaret's Bay, where his children and grandchildren have enjoyed summers together. Today, Skip continues to enjoy golfing, spending time with family and, whenever possible, making sure he is in the stands for at least one Huskies home football game each season.
From an 18-year-old arriving on campus in 1963 to a lifelong ambassador, supporter and champion of the Huskies, Skip's Saint Mary's story has spanned more than six decades. For his extraordinary loyalty, generosity, leadership and enduring commitment to Huskies Football, Dr. James "Skip" Oliver is a most deserving inductee into the Saint Mary's Athletics Hall of Fame.
